The Zzzzzzzzzz Code

Movie Review: The Da Vinci Code

Symbology Professor Dr. Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is called to murder scene at the Louvre in Paris. Pretty soon he's on the run with the victim's granddaughter (Audrey Tautou) from some murderous Catholics, Silas (Paul Bettany) in particular. Along the way he is assisted by weathly Sir Leigh Teabling (Ian McKellen). And there's a whole bunch of stuff about Christ and Mary Magdalene and symbols.

Much of your enjoyment of the film will hinge on how credible you find it. Stepping back from the historical truths behind the whole Christ/Mary/Knights templar bit, I found the whole "If the world knew about this the catholic church would fall" meme hard to swallow. I also thought the plot was rather absurd; the twists and turns were predictable, yet the villain's scheme was far too complicated.

All of this would still make the film enjoyable but not good. Unfortunately the chracters talk far too much. Aside from a number of smaller bits throughout the film, the last 15 minutes feels mostly unecessary. 15 minutes of exposition is way too much. Two Stars, not worth the time.
